Shopping for Bike Forks

There are many reasons why you could be in the market for a bike fork – you could be trying to enhance the performance of your existing bike, or you may be building a bike from different components. Whatever your reasons there are a few important things to consider when choosing a bike fork.

Choose a bike fork that suits your bike
The bike fork is in control of the balance of the bike. Its main job is to hold the front wheel and allow the rider to have full control over steering the bike. The right bike fork should work with your bike and complement its other features, so you pick one that matches your bike and which is comfortable to use.

Decide whether or not you require suspension
Most mountain bikes have a fork which contains a set of shock absorbers. Manufacturers typically produce different forks for varying styles of cycling and you may find that your particular requirements don’t include suspension.

However if you do find that you need a suspension fork then you will find that suspension fork design has really developed over the last few years. Suspension is usually required for rougher terrain and more challenging conditions and nowadays more suspension travel is readily available with some offering around 300mm of travel.

It is advisable to ask for help from a cycling specialist as there are varying degrees of suspension suitable for all scenarios from downhill cycling to windy single-track riding where a 100mm travel lockdown will suffice.

Adjustable

A ridged fork is good for working your technique and arms, but adjustability and lightweight materials are big selling points when choosing a bike fork. This means that you can adapt the fork’s travel to suit the terrain which opens up new possibilities in terms of locations for your cycling experiences. Therefore, if you should suddenly require less suspension travel for uphill or flat terrain cycling then you can ‘lock out’ or reduce the fork’s travel for more efficient riding. This can help you with the following:

Fast,Flowing Terrain. For a more flowing ride on fast descents
Slow and Technical.More precise rider feedback
Big Drops.Avoid ‘bottoming out’ avoid bouncing off the bike
